Triangle MomsRising…………. Who are we?
MomsRising in the Triangle is a new local nonpartisan group focused on activism and community service. We’re relatively new and are still determining our path, but are generally concerned with issues affecting moms and families: e.g. healthcare, family leave, fair wages, etc.
MomsRising (http://www.momsrising.org/) is a national online grass-roots nonpartisan organization with a broad agenda for kids and families. It has lots of opportunities to send online petitions regarding federal legislation. MomsRising in the Triangle is an offshoot of this effort which meets roughly once a month, and focuses more on state/local issues. We are an all volunteer effort comprised of Moms from different backgrounds who share a concern about what kind of world we are creating for all our children.
Our goal is to have a policy meeting and a service event every month.For policy meetings, we will be having speakers and trainings to prepare us to be effective advocates on state and local issues, with the goal of lobbying decision-makers on issues that matter to us. We would like to get our group involved in local politics that affects families and kids. We hope to accomplish this through educating ourselves about our local legislature, and having a personal impact on the upcoming legislative session by meeting personally with our legislative members.If you are interested in joining our google group please email kamather at earthlink dot net! For the service events, we hope to volunteer as a group with our kids. We will be working through KidsConnect (http://www.kidsconnectnc.org/index.html), a wonderful non-profit organization dedicated to involving even very young kids in serving their community, to identify service opportunities. We think this is a great way for our members to get together outside of the meetings in a forum that involves our kids and helps others all at the same time. Every month, we will try to coordinate our members for a date to help our local community out!
What have we done so far this year?
This year, we’ve had the following events:
In January, we held an organizational planning meeting.
In February, we hosted a house party to introduce MomsRising to new people.
In March, we kicked off our service projects by preparing three dishes which we donated to Urban Ministries of Durham - a local community kitchen.
